The Bed Book Review

The Bed

by Nickos Vlachos

It's 1983 in Chicago. Joe, a struggling artist, and Sara, a nurse, just got married. They are deeply in love, which helps sustain them through life challenges. At first, money is tight. Then children come along. While Joe endures a crisis of confidence, Sara never wavers in her belief and support for him. After she convinces him to try portrait painting, he finds himself propelled into notoriety as one of the nation's most talented and popular artists. However, fame does not necessarily bring the anticipated benefits. Their marriage founders as events intercede to create a rift between them. Close to the breaking point, they realize what is truly important in their lives---each other. With a re-commitment to their marriage, their story concludes in 2045.

***MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BED***

This starts on Joe and Sara’s wedding night with them feeling so much love for one another. Three years later, Joe’s paintings still aren’t selling. Sara comforts him, even as they argue, and suggests he change to portrait painting. Thirteen years and two kids after that, Joe is a famous painter. They have everything they have always wanted, but have drifted apart. The arguing has escalated so much so that Sara asks for a divorce. This becomes another turning point for them as they work through it. Span to 20 years later, they are back to loving each other as much as day one. Sara gets sick and dies. In the end 25 years later, Joe is 86 and Sara’s spirit comes to take him home.

This story is a romantic comedy written in the style of a play, with narration, and the setting was their bedroom throughout the entire play. I liked how the author relayed Joe and Sara’s feeling throughout the play. Even though it would span many years in-between, you still could feel how they got to that point. I could relate to everything they went through, and felt empathy for both of them. It was an enjoyable read.
